One Vietnamese Word A Day: CHƯA

CHƯA: 1.  when used by itself, it means “not yet” 2. when used before as verb/adj/adv it means “not…yet”; 3. when used at the end of an utterance, it forms as question with “yet” at the end

  • Ăn chưa?: Have you eaten yet? (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out))
  • Đói chưa? : Hungry yet? (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out))
  • Tới chưa? Are you/we there yet? (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out)
  • Chín chưa? Is it cooked/ripe yet? (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out)
  • Xong chưa? finished yet? (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out)
  • Chưa xong: not finished yet. (to someone familiar, of the same or lower status, the subject is left out, honorary particles unnecessary)
