One Vietnamese Word A Day: GÌ

Gì:   what (full form: cái gì; plural form, even for abstract things: Những gì; Cái gì cũng: anything, everything)

  • Bạn nói gì? (What did you say?) (to someone like a friend)
  • Em muốn ăn gì? (What do you want to eat?) (to someone like a younger sibling)
  • Cám ơn bạn về những gì bạn đã làm. (Thank you for everything you have done) (to someone who is a friend, thus bạn)
  • Không có gì: nothing (literally, there is no what, there is nothing)
  • Gì cũng được: Whatever (it doesn’t mattter what) (whatever is fine)
  • Ở thành phố  Hồ Chí Minh cái gì cũng mắc. (In HCMC, everything is expensive)
